Bran Castle
Sat tall on a cliff on the old border between Transylvania and Wallachia, Bran Castle is home to the legend of Dracula and is the most popular fortress in Romania.
Built between 1377 and 1388, the castle is an important national monument that inspired famed writer Bram Stoker to create one of the most popular novels of all time: Dracula.
Discovering the Castle
As you walk along the castle's narrow passages, you'll discover the different rooms and medieval furniture that will make you feel like you've traveled back in time.
One of the rooms is dedicated to the legend of Vlad the Impaler and the myth of Count Dracula. And if you'd like to discover some of the castle's gory past, there's even a room full of the inventive torture instruments that were the range at the time. The castle also has a central patio where far from fair trials for those accused of heresy took place.
Fact or Fiction?
Whilst the castle is famous for being Dracula's castle, the real-life Dracula, Vlad Tepes (more commonly known as "the Impaler" because of his torture techniques) actually never lived in Bran Castle, but it was the sight that inspired Bram Stoker's bestselling novel.
A Must-See
Bran Castle is one of the country's most important tourist attractions and thousands of tourists flock here each year.
Legend and reality come together at the castle, which stands tall on the hillside showing its dominance. Undoubtedly, it's a sight that brings shivers down the spines of the brave visitors that want to delve into the history and legends that surround the place.
